Acceptance Tests Colocated With Needs
TL;DR - Session insights
- Agent initially created acceptance tests as separate zettel notes, but user requested they be co-located with their corresponding needs within the same zettel for better organization
- The note MCP structure organized 63 needs (N001-N063) into 10 themed zettels covering Core Platform, Visual Design, Navigation, Content Pages, Blog Posts, Session Logs, Discovery/SEO, Engagement/Accessibility, Content Authoring, and Community Features
- Agent deleted 6 separate acceptance test notes and updated the 10 needs notes to include inline TEST entries with #N0XX tags for traceability
- RFC 2119 keywords (MUST, SHOULD, MAY) were used throughout needs specifications to match formal requirements engineering practices
Session Log
USER: ## CONTEXT
We are going to discuss the needs for this project / product. This will be a critical debate between you and me and we will go as long as necessary. The final goal is to be extremely creative and critical at the same time and capture all the needs for this project / product.
ROLE
You are an extremely creative person (i.e., someone with a very dominant right brain) and have spent many years honing your needs specification skills. You sit down with the customer who only has a general idea of what they want and then systematically work with them to specify, in detail, the whole product. You have prior experience in industrial design as well as being the key designer in a top design studio that has design some of the most iconic products and designs.
ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS
You have access to a bunch of MCPs to help you work on these -
note, todo, zetandgraphviz.noteMCP - This is a notetaking MCP that follows the zettelkasten method. Each note is a zettel. All zettels are stored as markdown files. These files can contain project notes, outstanding tasks (see next point) and other information about the project.todoMCP - This is a unified task management tool that gives you access to outstanding tasks across all projects. This MCP sources its markdown files from those project directories thatnoteMCP works with.zetMCP - This is a freeform zettelkasten (close to how Niklas Luhmann envisioned it) that is used to hold notes that are not part of any project. This is my personal knowledge base and note taking space. Unless there is a need to work with my knowledge base, you will rarely need this MCP.graphvizMCP - This is a simple shell script that accepts graphviz content along with the diagram format to use and returns path to a temporary diagram file that you must then copy into the appropriate location in your project directory.
Since you are an AI agent with limited context window, you need to externalize all your notes, tasks and other project information so that you can continue where you left off, immaterial of whether you run out of context window or abruptly stop working for some reason beyond your control. So make sure you externalize and update information frequently.
Whenever you and customer agree on something, you will create two pieces of information -
- Capture the need
- This will be a combination of TODO items as well as notes around it. Notes will hold customer needs information and you need to add a TODO to title the need which will be used later by another agent to work on.
- This means all the code and other technical decisions / arguments we may have had has to be skipped. You have to faithfully capture the need and its TODO only and nothing else.
- Since we are using zettelkasten as our foundation, you must decide if a new zettel needs to be created or the need can be added to an existing zettel. This also lets you group needs into themes / or major topics which will also help us later to keep the context tight.
- When writing to zettek, the need and its title must be structured like a formal requirements specification. You must use RFC 2119 and use their requirements level specification for each need. But this is a needs spec, not requirements doc. So style it in a form of how a customer would talk about their needs (but using RFC 2119 keywords).
- Each need should be structured as follows -
NEED: [N001] - <Need title> * Key information about the need * Key information about the need * Last point listing any references to external documents, websites, blogs, etc. that was used to build this need. Include other zettels (from my freeform `zet`) that you may have identified as being relevant for this need. + [link](reference URL) + [link](reference URL)- The
NEEDkeyword indicates that it is a customer need. - The
[N001]in the title description indicates the unique ID for that specific need.
- The
- Capture the acceptance test for the need
- This will hold the acceptance tests and criteria mapping to the need you’ve captured just now.
- Use all the standard test design methods like like equivalence partitioning, boundary value analysis, etc. when creating tests.
- There may be more than one acceptance test for a given need. Be a maximalist when creating acceptance tests to make sure you’ve captured all kinds of tests - happy cases, alternate cases, boundary cases, failure cases, load cases, security cases, etc.
- This is not a test script. Rather, this is a test specification of how to test the whole system to confirm that the need associated with it has been met. This information will be fed to a acceptance testing LLM agent who will run these test under customer supervision.
- The acceptance test should be structured as follows -
- Each need should be structured as follows -

TASK
- There is a set of needs in
design/1.1_NEEDS.md. Record the need using the MCPs you have access to. - There is a set of acceptance tests in
design/1.2_ACCEPTANCE.md. First, verify if these tests are sufficient to meet all the needs you’ve written till now. If not, create more. Record all the acceptance tests using the MCPs you have access to.
